An Evening Out On Valentine’s Day

And so it begins.

I can already see the post that Katie from Sass and balderdash will be writing.   Why do we need a specific day of the year to tell people we love them?  Shouldn’t we all show our love each and every day we live? Of course we should!  But in reality, people may not and Valentine’s Day is still (and will probably always be) the day couples go out for a romantic evening out.  That day is slowly but surely approaching which can only mean one thing for me…

Extra shifts at work.

Yes, I am a waitress (for those of you who don’t already know) and that means that around this time of year is when couples desperately call in hopes of scoring a reservation on the busiest night of the year for restaurant owners (plus their staff).  Bring in the extra tables for two, candles, and red table cloths!  It’s going to be a long ride.

It’s crazy the amount of people going out to eat on Valentine’s day is.  So much hustle and bustle for nothing.  Going out to eat on Valentine’s Day is a crazy ordeal, well…maybe it won’t be, but I can see it now.

You make a reservation, but the hostess informs you that they only have place at a specific time.  No big deal – you’ll just go see the 9:00 movie instead.  You arrive at the restaurant only to find other couples impatiently waiting for their table to be ready.  You wait in line for a bit before finally settling down at your table, only when you get there you find that you’re pretty much elbow to elbow with the couple at the small table next to you.  You try to have a deep, meaningful conversation as you hear the nervous words of the guy sitting next to you proposing to his girlfriend.  You feel uncomfortable as she says yes and glance over at your dating hoping – or not hoping – that the same thing will happen.  Then you pay for an overly expensive bill (plus tip for the waiter running around like a chicken with his head cut off) realizing that you’re late for the movie and thus ends the romantic evening out.

Sounding like a little too much?  Maybe because it is.

Now, I’m not discouraging anyone from going out on Valentine’s Day.  The thing is I should be encouraging you since that night will be a high paying night for me, but the truth is it seems like the night will never go exactly as you planned so why go through all of this?  Since going out has so many outside factors affecting your night, you may want to consider doing something else.  Or perhaps going out on a different night with no pressure and no stress.  Just sayin’.

Oh! And if you do go out, please remember to pay your bill.  Dining and Dashing is not cool.

See you tomorrow morning!

  1. My hubby and I make reservations for at a lovely tea house for lunch on that day. We take off and go early. It is so nice and the food is delcious. Then, at dinner I make a lovely dinner for the two of us. I hate crowds and menus that are limited for holidays etc. My favorite part of the day is when he opens my handmade Valentine, and he hands me one he has learned to make. Precious to me. I would go bonkers being a waitress on holidays. You are amazing to be be able to do it. My grandma did this and it is one of the hardest jobs out there.

  2. I never even though of how restaurant staffs are affected by the Valentine’s Day rush. That must be a colossal pain in the neck. Mr. Weebles and I never go out for dinner on Valentine’s Day, it’s just so much easier to go out ANY OTHER DAY than that!

  3. Hahahaha! I just now saw this. I could’ve gone that route, unfortunately this Valentine’s Day there’s a more pressing cultural event in the form of a movie release happening that couldn’t go unmentioned. I’ll have you know that in your honor, my boyfriend and I will NOT be going out on Valentine’s Day (…mostly because it’s a Thursday). But honestly if I were you, I’d be more worried about the weekend after since it does fall on a weekday.
