The Best Lyric In Your Favorite Songs

Listening to the playlist on my laptop, I heard a song that I just absolutely love the lyrics to. It’s a tune by Del Amitri called Here and Now.  There’s a line in it that goes like this:

“Sometimes I could sell my soul just to sit and watch you smoke.”

It brings me to think about all the other lyrics out there that really touch me when listening to them.  Doesn’t there always seem to be that one line in a song?  The organization of words strung together that people look forward to hearing, lose themselves in, and make them cry.  There are quite a few songs that have those special moments in them, at least in my opinion.  Of course, it would be impossible to write them all down, but I could point one out in pretty much any song I listen to.  Sometimes the melody with the lyrics fit just right, or the timing is perfect, or the delivery gives you chills.  I’m hoping that everyone knows what I’m talking about.

So, I put on my playlist and wrote my favorite lines from the first 15 songs I heard.

Here they are!

“I had a dream that my house was on fire.  People laughed while it burned.”
Blue Rodeo,  Till I Am Myself Again

“Gravity, stay the hell away from me.  Gravity, has taken better men than me.”
John Mayer, Gravity

“I try and I try and I try, but everybody wants to put me down, they say I’m going crazy.”
Queen, Somebody To Love

“People say crazy things.”
Adele, Rumor Has It

“You just sit there wishing you could still make love.”
Radiohead, High and Dry

“But, watching stars without you, my soul cries.”
Sade, Kissing You

“But tonight, you’re on my mind so you never know. ”
Performed by Jamie Cullum, Lover You Should Have Come Over

“I am 1962 and I am ready for a fight.”
Jann Arden and Jackson Browne, Unloved

“We’ve got loud guitars and big suspicions, great big guns and small ambitions. We still argue over who is God.”
Performed by Shannon Curfman, Hard to Make a Stand (Sorry, can’t find a video for this one…)

“Who ever said you could be saved by a song.”
Sam Roberts, Uprising Down Under

“The world could show nothing to me, so what good would living do me?”
Beach Boys, God Only Knows

“Too many lovers in one lifetime ain’t good for you.”
Performed by Fiest, Inside Out

“The night is coming down, drowning us in blue and it all points toward the things we shouldn’t do.”
Del Amitri, Downfall

“Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say ‘I love you‘ right out loud.  ”
Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now (actually that whole song is perfect and hard to pick just one line, but I think that one feels the best.)

“To you, I’d never be cold”
Performed by Eva Cassidy, Songbird

What are some of the best lines in your favorite songs?

  1. excellent subject!….one of my favorites:
Glen Cambell’s Rhinestone Cowboy, written by Larry Weiss
“And I dream of the things I’ll do
With a subway token and a dollar tucked inside my shoe”

  2. Love this! I’m SUCH a lyrics person, and one of my favorite lyrics by The New Pornographers in their song Challengers is: “whatever the mess you are, you’re mine, ok” heartbreaking and wonderful. I came over from NaBloPoMo and I’ll be adding this to my list of daily reads :)

    • Oh wow! Thank you so much, Alyssa! This was such a random thought I was having, but I think a lot of people can relate. Thank you so much for checking out my blog, and good luck with NABloPoMo!

      Cheers!

  3. So awesome! I love lyrics, I love lists – especially playlists – and I love picking favourite things. I’ve been listening to Short Skirt Long Jacket by Cake quite a bit lately. I always gravitate to the line “She is fast, and thorough, and sharp as a tack, she’s touring the facility and picking up slack.”
